    My Beauty Cocktail: Yoslin Ruhane

Yoslin Ruhane has a contagious positive attitude. She’s a travel fanatic, fashion enthusiast, and a beach lover. The fashion model and marketing consultant lives in Mexico. Here, she talks about her go-to beach essentials, signature red lip,ย  and a holy-grail skincare product for plumpy and hydrated skin.

    How do you define beauty?

Everyone is beautiful. Beauty is about self-worth and how we feel inside to show outside, feel comfy with who we are and don’t listen to society’s rules.

What’s inspiring you in life right now?

Learning about life, about me, and the world is always inspiring me because it is amazing to see how big everything is: the dreams, the possibilities, the world, and the perspectives.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Time is always our best friend. This means it doesn’t matter what is happening. Everything, with time, will be in the place where it’s meant to be.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Enjoy everything that comes your way. Go at your own pace. Do not rush anything. Finally, you are amazing and gonna keep being amazing.

Let’s talk fashion. What’s a must-have clothing item everyone should have?

White sneakers. I think you can make all kinds of outfits with this must. It doesn’t matter which brand or design it is, and being comfortable is always important.

Since you’re a major bikini lover, do you have a favourite style?

I like all kinds of bikinis. I prefer colour full style or different styles, and of course, I love to always keep it classy.

    ย Your go-to beach essentials?

I’m the kind of person who loves to swim on the beach, which means I can’t go just to relax on the sand. So, part of my beach essentials is another outfit to change into after a swim, sunblock, sunglasses, and some fruit, and sometimes I can make time to read a book to relax after a swim.

What does your skincare routine look like?

First, I wash my face with honey facial soap. After that, I use Nivea’s Rose Care to tone my face.ย  Next, I Moisturize using Clinique’s Moisture Surge on my face and neck, which makes my skin feel super hydrated and plump. For my eyes, I absolutely love Isdinceutics’ Vital Eyes Anti Aging Cream. It’s so rich, soothing and refreshing for the eyes.

    And sunscreen?

I have two kinds. The first one is ISDIN Ultralight tinted mineral sunscreen, and the other one is ISDIN Fusion Water SPF 50 Ultralight daily sunscreen.

    What about makeup?

Most of my makeup is just Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara by Too Faced, lipstick Fabby by MAC and Clay Play To-Go Cheek by Tarte, and that’s it. I’m not fond of too much makeup, so I try to keep it minimal.

Do you have a signature red lip?

    Haute Pants by MAC.

ย How do you care for and style your hair?

Afghan oil and some natural remedies for glow and hydration.

Do you have a favourite perfume?

Fame by Paco Rabanne, Flowerbomb by Viktor&Rolf, and Perfect by Marc Jacobs.

ย ย Do you have any self-care rituals that help you feel your best?

As my boyfriend always says, drink water and eat greens.

What makes you the happiest version of yourself?

Good company, good food, good energy, and lots and lots of love.

What Superpower do you wish you had and why?

Teletransport. So that I can be wherever I want and whenever I want.

    ย Your affirmation for today.ย

Today, I am going to happen to the world, not the other way around.

Thank you so much for sharing, Yoslin!

  • My Beauty Cocktail: Aayushi Pathania

    My Beauty Cocktail: Aayushi Pathania

Fashion designer Aayushi Pathania has always loved fashion. “My partner spotted this ability (designing) in me after seeing me creating many of my wedding outfits. And he encouraged me to start my own label.” Here, she shares her favourite sunscreen, one book everyone must read, and the best thing to do after a bad dayโ€ฆ

Creative expression can take many forms. What made you decide to start your fashion brand?

Right from high school, I was often appreciated for my styling and clothing choices. My friends looked up to me to give them style advice. I was happily a personal shopper for many. So it’s an inbuilt skill polished finely over the years. My partner spotted this ability in me after seeing me designing many of my wedding outfits. And he encouraged me to start my own label. Then the encouragement was also followed by my old friends who have known me for years. I worked with Burberry in London, which made me realize I have an eye for detailing. I learnt a great deal about fashion, clothing, and non-apparel from there.

ย As a designer, can you create anything you can imagine?

That’s the beauty of it. With the right set of people, yes, you can create anything you can imagine. We help our clients put life to the designs in their imagination; although it’s a long process but totally worth it.ย

Your designs have a strong sense of femininity, from the designs to the fabrics, that feels empowering and strong. Can you talk about what goes into creating your garments?

The process is hard, time-consuming and takes lots of effort, but the outcome is super satisfying, knowing that this garment has contributed to many households and livelihoods.ย

The process includes designing, sampling, creating, recreating right from imagining, picking inspiration and fabric, and choosing the right material for handwork. We have many skilful artisans involved in making one garment. Our fabrics and materials are sourced; a minimum of 2-3 artisans do hand embroidery on it, the master who cuts the garment and a karigar who will then stitch the same. After, a lady usually checks for the quality and puts other small detailing like fringes and tassels if the garment requires that. The garment is then packed and shipped.

From where do you find the inspiration for the prints?

Inspiration for prints comes from my surroundings, From nature, modern art, sunsets, and travel. I am a big sucker for nature and travel. I travel a lot, giving me a bigger platform to observe, learn and recreate.

What story are you telling about the women who wear your designs?

The women who wear our designs are happy, confident and content as they stand out in the garments, which are handmade, beautiful, unique and timeless. They are modern independent women whose personality is reflected through the attire they have adorned. They are filled with the sense of happiness that they have given something back to society, knowing that their purchase encourages handmade and hand embroidered, helping keep this beautiful art of hand embroidery alive.

Could you select one or two looks that have special meaning for you?

A look for a new bride wearing a hand embroidered full flare perfect red anarkali suit feeling beautiful, happy and festive. She is loved and complimented all the time. This look has a special meaning for me as it makes anyone who wears it happy and confident and gives us immense happiness to be a part of their big moment. The bridal pieces are timeless and gorgeous.ย

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your label?

The biggest lesson that I have learnt is that it’s important to be passionate about what you do. Because then it never feels like work, and you always enjoy it.ย

ย How would you define slow fashion?

Timeless designs that are made to be worn for many years. Sometimes pieces are passed on to the next generation. Throughout creating the garment, we respect the artisans’ environment and animals. For my label, we use high-quality fabrics and materials so that the garment has more life and is easily repairable. Sustainable processes and fabrics emphasize the art of garment making and celebrate the skills of craftspeople and artisans. Made-to-order to reduce excessive production, we create classic, timeless pieces.

What’s inspiring you in life right now?

It’s a funny confession, but Instagram is inspiring me right now! I see so many girls/ women doing wonders with their lives, and in any field you see, you will. Find someone or the other building a good life following their passions and dreamsโ€”more power to everyone out there.

    How do you define beauty?

Beauty is when there is humbleness and kindness in one. When you are truly confident in yourself, that is beauty. Because if someone is pleasing-looking to the eye but rude to others, that is not beautiful to me.

    Best beauty/style advice you’ve received?

Less is more. Be comfortable in your own skin.ย

How would you define your style in three words?

    Chic, sophisticated and classic.

ย How do you relax after a long day stressful day?

Comfort food and a happy/light conversation or some Netflix. I like to stay at home.ย

Your go-to for having a good laugh?

My elder sister. She cracks me up big time, any dayโ€”my personal entertainer since day 1.ย

    How do you practise self-care?

Eat healthy, be grateful, drink water, sleep, exercise, stay close to nature, and keep your loved ones closer and tell them what they mean to you.

    What’s your wake-up ritual?

I like to start my day with warm water, honey, and lemon.

    What’s your go-to bed ritual?

I spend some time in front of my mirror brushing my teeth, washing my face, and applying my vit c and night cream. All while listening to some soft music. I usually add a little prayer before I sleep.

Walk us through your daily skincare ritual.

I cleanse my face. Then, I use the Cellular Refining Lotion by La Prairie as aย  toner. I follow it up with a Minimalist Vitamin C serum for glowing-looking skin. For moisturizing, I use theย Ceramide & Hyaluronic Acid Moisturiser from Re’equil.ย And I swear by sunscreen. It’s the most important one for your skin. I love eye masks which I occasionally use during late evenings.

A book that everyone should read?

There are many, but everyone should read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne because it helps you answer your ifs and whys. It helps you think positively and shows you the power of manifestation.

    Vintage or new?

Classic with a pinch of modern in it.

    Style-icon

I have many, to name a few – my first one ever was Blaire Waldorf from Gossip Girls. I also have always admired Audrey Hepburn and Bella Hadid.

ย Favourite piece of clothing you own?

It’s very difficult to choose one! I love them all, especially the ones that I made.

ย Must-have clothing item everyone should have?

    A comfortable piece of denim

    Drugstore makeup or designer?

Designer!! The quality is great for your skin and eyes. Own less but own quality when it comes to makeup.ย

    ย Lipstick or lip gloss?

    ย A matte lipstick.

    ย Favourite perfume?

    Dior – hypnotic poison.

    Your daily affirmation?

I have a healthy body, a tranquil mind and a peaceful soul. I am happy, and I am grateful. I attract positive things, and I am God’s child.

ย Thank you so much, Aayushi! ( Psst- Keep an eye out on Aayushi’s cool fashion and travel content here. )

  • My Beauty Cocktail: Rachel Raj

    My Beauty Cocktail: Rachel Raj

Rachel Raj is a badass Toronto-based fashion stylist, makeup artist, and art director. I’ve never met Rachel, but I could feel her fierce and powerful energy radiate through our conversations online. Here, she shares the best drugstore makeup, a HOT styling tip that changed her world, and a super-easy hack to remove glitter.

When did you know you wanted to be in the creative field?

I was around 12 when I realized how intrigued I was by fashion. My mom made sure I was fashionable and into art and craft ever since I was a kid. And honestly, I think creativity flows in my family, although nobody ever pursued anything in fashion, design or arts. So someone had to take the first step, haha.

How would you describe your work?

My work is subtle and fierce at the same time. There’s art and beauty and a hell lot of concepts, all in one frame.ย

Where do you draw inspiration from?

From literally everywhere. I mean, recently I went to the city with my friend, and kid you not, I felt so inspired. I don’t know if it was the crowd, the lights, the wind or the birds. I don’t go looking for inspiration, and it just comes to me.ย

I have read that research is incredibly important in your field of work? Where do you start? Do you keep any journals or mood boards?

Research is an integral part of the process. The better the research, the clearer you are on what exactly has to be done. When I started, I did not understand the need for research, and my overconfidence got the best of me. Eventually, I acknowledged how significant research is in the whole process with time. I have a journal wherein I note down every small detail I think is important. It is also a space to welcome new concepts and ideas. I also make mood boards prior to shoots. And trust me, mood boards literally make everything so easy.ย

Is there anything that frustrates you most about your line of work?

It has to be the way freelancers are treated. We’re not given as much respect, or our word is taken for granted. Models are body-shamed, while most brands and people don’t even understand why a stylist is required for a shoot or the significance of a stylist.ย

What’s been the highlight of your career so far? What makes it special?

I think the first time I was approached for styling on a freelance basis. Yes, that definitely was the highlight because the industry is very saturated. People are not willing to hire on a freelance basis or freelancers who have fierce concepts. But apart from that, I think the time when I worked for Femina Miss India when I was 18, a second-year bachelor’s student. I got to work with some amazing models and Miss Universe 2017 and Miss Universe 2016. It was an amazing opportunity.ย

Looking back on your beginner days, how do you feel your work has changed or evolved?

Trust me when I say this, I’ve grown so so much. When I started as a stylist, I directly rushed to the part where I got to dress models. But now, when I work, I put in a lot of thought as to which model would fit the theme, what garments to source and how, what background would be right for the frames, what mood I am creating, etc. I remember when I started doing make-up on models, it was straight-up funny. I didn’t even focus on the blending of base makeup ๐Ÿ™

Could you select one or two looks you have done that have special meaning for you?

There was this one impromptu shoot, and it was the first time working with this photographer- who is now my favourite photographer to work with. We decided to do an indoor shoot with absolutely no idea where to shoot, styling, or anything else.ย

We looked for a model in the morning and gathered at noon to begin. I had a few garments with me but no idea how to incorporate them. But we just went with the flow, and things started looking good for us. We shot in a vintage Indian kitchen with power suits on the models, which turned out good. That shoot is so special to my heart.

What would you like to accomplish in the next three years?

I honestly do not know. I’d love to work with a magazine or a big brand, but I haven’t really given much thought to it.ย

Let’s chat beauty. How do you define beauty?

I think beauty is very subjective. For me, beauty has never been about the complexion, body type or how clear your skin is. It has always been about how I’ve been treated and your intentions toward people. Oh, also, some people have super-defined faces, and I’m here for it, haha xD.

What’s your skincare routine like? AM &PM

Oh, I am so bad at skincare. I wash my face when I wake up and use moisturizer, and the same when I go to bed. I did start using a couple of serums, but my skin is so sensitive that I never make an effort to invest in new products. Currently, I’m using this serum. ย

How do you care for your hair?

I don’t really do much. Maybe apply oil with honey or curd once in a while. And definitely condition, yes.ย

    Blow-dry or air-dry?

Air-dry if I ain’t going anywhere and hair straightening if I’m heading out!

Three products you always keep in your bag?

    Lipstick, hand Cream, and perfume.

The best beauty tip you’ve ever received?

While filling your brows, don’t go too hard on them. There’s a high chance of pulling out brows while doing it.ย

    What’s your beauty philosophy?

I am honestly a ‘comfort over fashion’ person. There are days when I dress up like a doll, but other days I make sure I’m as comfortable as I can be whilst looking good. And I believe everyone has their definition of beauty and fashion. You define your beauty and fashion the way you like it, with sophistication and decency.

Favourite piece of clothing you own?

It has to be my mum’s beige mesh top from the 90s. The embroidery on the neckline is just so gorgeous.ย

Must-have clothing item everyone should have?

A basic blacktop. It just saves the day. Oh, also, a good pair of sneakers because why not!

    Vintage or new?

Vintage anyday. It’s the aesthetics that have me hooked.

    Who’s your favourite style icon?

Is it weird if I say I do not have a style icon? And if I did have, it would be my mom. Oh, when I tell you, she looked like a goddess back in her days, and she still does.ย

Has any hot styling/fashion tips she passed on always stayed with you?

I can’t think of styling or fashion tip, but I can tell you what changed my world. As a kid, I faced a lot of racism since everyone around me had a lighter complexion. Some colours wouldn’t suit me, or at least that thought. I remember my mom telling me, “When you walk out of that door (the house), walk with confidence. Walk like you own the world, and nothing can ever stop you”. And I have lived by that ever since.ย

    What’s your favourite makeup look?

I personally love the shimmer makeup look and graphic eyeliners. I love how the shimmer pops out on my skin. But apart from that, I really like the pop colour on eyes and anything that looks bold.ย

The million-dollar question: how does one remove glitter?

So, if you’re applying glitter for a shoot, ask your makeup artist to use aloe vera gel as the base for the glitter over your foundation. Aloe Vera gel isn’t visible on the camera, and it is so easy to remove. If you’re using aloe Vera gel for everyday makeup or something, make sure you apply enough moisturizer beforehand. I generally don’t use a primer on myself; moisturizer gang all the way! And when you’re removing the glitter, put some Vaseline or oil on your cotton swab. It’ll shorten the process and not irritate the skin.

Do you have any useful tips/tricks for people who suck at eyeliner?

Applying the perfect liner is a tricky business. โ…˜ days I walk out with both my eyes having the perfect liner. My only trick is that I don’t doubt myself while putting on the liner. I make sure I don’t let the eyeliner have power over me. Also, make the borders first, then fill in.

    Drugstore makeup or designer?

Ah, this is a tough one. Until two years ago, I never owned designer makeup. So for me, designer makeup is for days when I want to feel special or if it’s an occasion. But daily, I would definitely choose drugstore makeup.ย

Who are the stars from your drugstore makeup aisle?

Um, definitely Maybelline, followed by Lakme, Revlon and Nyx.

    What’s your morning ritual?

I wake up grumpy and annoyed. I check my messages, and I speak to my parents first thing in the morning before speaking to anyone else.ย

What unwinding ritual helps you relax after an exhausting day?

I am so happy when I go to bed, because FINALLY! I pray every once in a while and binge watch The Office, Friends, or Schitt’s Creek while I eat my comfort food is my favourite form of relaxation. And, the other way I can relax is taking a trip to literally anywhere.

What little things bring you happiness?

A gust of wind, seeing birds fly across the sky on a sunny day, having blueberry ice cream or cheesecake once in a while, and my friends calling me now and then to check up on me even when I fail to do so.ย

Thank you so much, Rachel. You Rock!!!
